Launching ESPs Licencing Framework
Mogadishu, 20 July 2024: The National Electricity Authority (NEA) has officially launched the electricity service provider’s licensing framework in Mogadishu, Somalia. This high-level event was graced by the Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Salah; the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, H.E. Abdillahi Bidhaan Ahmed; the Director General of the National Electricity Authority, H.E. Abdullahi Ahmed Dayib; the Deputy Director General of the National Electricity Authority; electricity service providers in Mogadishu; representatives from civil society; academia; and numerous high-level delegates from the Federal Government of Somalia.
The launch aimed to introduce and formally commence the electricity service providers’ licensing framework, a pivotal mandate of the National Electricity Authority. The event provided a comprehensive overview of the new licensing framework, outlining key regulations, processes, and requirements for electricity service providers.
In his keynote speech, the Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Salah, expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, H.E. Abdillahi Bidhaan Ahmed, and the Director General of the National Electricity Authority, as well as the electricity service providers and other key participants. He emphasized the significance of licensing electricity services, which will ensure the provision of affordable, reliable, and accessible electricity to consumers, thereby enhancing service delivery.
The Minister of Energy and Water Resources, H.E. Abdillahi Bidhaan Ahmed, reiterated the importance of the newly launched licensing framework. He urged service providers to adhere to the framework, highlighting that it would improve service delivery and reduce electricity costs, which have previously hindered economic growth. The Minister extended his appreciation to the Director General for the introduction of this essential framework, which aligns with NEA’s mandate. He also commended the electricity service providers for their continuous efforts to enhance their services and meet regulatory standards.
The Director General of the National Electricity Authority, H.E. Abdullahi Ahmed Dayib, expressed his gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy and Water Resources for their presence and support. He also acknowledged the dedication of the electricity service providers who have tirelessly worked to illuminate the homes of millions of Somali citizens. The Director General urged these providers to comply with the new licensing provisions to ensure continued progress and improved service quality.
This launch marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s energy sector, demonstrating NEA’s commitment to fostering a regulated and efficient electricity supply industry that benefits all Somali citizens.
